THE BUILDING
The current building was completed in 1614, replacing earlier buildings that have stood on or near the present site since the 7th century. Most of a stone building built in the 12th century was swept away in 1605-06 after particularly high floods. The present structure incorporates surviving parts and salvaged material from the older church. The brick tower was added one hundred years later and the clock was installed in 1769.
A rare external staircase, serving the gallery within the church and providing access to the bell ringing chamber, was added in 1834. Five bells were installed in 1877 and a sixth was added in 1980 when the tower was strengthened and the clock restored. The organ was installed in 1908 and has since been modernised. Choir and clergy vestries were added in 1934.
A fuller version of this history may be read on the church website (see below) or in The Guide to St Nicholas Church, published by the Friends for £2.00, copies of which are in the church porch, or may be obtained from the Secretary of the Friends.
There is seldom a time when money is not required for something needing attention or improvement within the church, the building or churchyard.
